Bet-VA is free to read. This page explains how the site is paid for, what that means for the pages you read, and what it does not change. It should be read together with the disclaimer, the terms of use and the privacy notice.
How Bet-VA is paid
The site has affiliate agreements with some sportsbooks, casinos, racing and fantasy sports operators, usually through their affiliate programs or through networks that manage those programs. We may be paid a commission by such an operator when you reach it through one of our links and then open an account, or make a deposit once you have one. That payment takes one of two forms: a single fee, or a cut of what the operator earns from the account. These payments cover the cost of writing, checking and hosting the guide. We do not sell display advertising and do not charge readers.
What it costs you
Nothing. The operator pays the commission out of its own marketing budget. You see the same welcome offer and the same terms whether you arrive through our link or type the operator's address yourself, unless a page clearly says that a promo code is specific to Bet-VA.
Which links are affiliate links
Affiliate links are the buttons and links that take you to an operator, such as "Visit" or "Claim offer" buttons in operator boxes, review pages and comparison tables. Each goes first to a /go/ address on our own domain, which then forwards you to the operator. These links are marked rel="sponsored". Links to the Virginia Lottery, to laws and official documents, to news sources and to help organizations are ordinary links: nobody pays us for them. The "Partner sites" block on the home page is a paid placement and its link is marked as sponsored in the same way.
When you open a /go/ link, the server sets two cookies on bet-va.com, XSRF-TOKEN and mozbiz_session, for 20 hours each, to carry the click to the operator and protect it from forgery. Two more, mz_vid (1 year) and mz_src (30 days), are set on any visit to count visits and clicks and to record where a visit came from. Details are in the cookie policy.
Rankings and featured operators
The operators we have agreements with can appear in lists, tables and highlighted boxes. Being a partner does not by itself earn a place. Where an operator stands depends on whether it is licensed in Virginia, how clear its terms are, how its offer compares with others and what is known about payouts and customer service. A partner can rank below an operator we have no agreement with, and a page will still say when an offer comes with heavy wagering requirements or when an operator is not licensed in the state.
Keeping the editorial line separate
Operators do not write or approve our pages, cannot buy a review, and do not see an article before it is published. If an operator asks us to change a page, we change it only when the facts are wrong. A commission can end at any time; that does not change what we write about an operator.
What we ask of you
Before you register, read the operator's current terms and check that it is licensed where you are. Offers change faster than any guide can follow. The betting and gambling content on Bet-VA is for adults aged 21 or over. Has betting stopped being fun? We point you to the National Problem Gambling Helpline at 1-800-MY-RESET (1-800-697-3738).
